Day and Night of 9/8

Introduction to Turkish Romani 12:30pm–2:15pm The Romani people (sometimes
derogatorily called "gypsies") are a group that migrated from India to every
corner of Europe, the Middle East, and parts of Asia. Turkish Romani dance is
characterized by its attitude, directness, powerful gestures, and the 9/8
rhythm.

9/8 Percussion • Romani and Karsilama 2:30pm–4:15pm Mike will break down how to
play 9/8 rhythms (Romani and Karsilama) and then play his clarinet for us to
drum and zill along. This workshop is a special chance to learn/practice
percussion skills to LIVE music! Dancers are encouraged to take this workshop:
zills welcome, loaner drums available.

Night of 9/8 Shimmy Shack Show Doors open at 4:30pm for shopping, bake sale,
surprises. Mike Gregian, Hagop Garabedian and Costas Maniatakos will entertain
us with live music and our dance show will feature our workshop instructor,
Pacita Prasarn, Erzulie, two Shimmy Shack dancers and TWO LUCKY 9/8 WORKSHOP
PARTICIPANTS!

To enter your name into the raffle for one of the two 12 minute dance slots, get
your workshop check in by October 15, 2009 to the address listed below. If you
are a dancer and sign up for both the percussion workshop and the dance
workshop, you'll get two chances to win!

Pacita Prasarn specializes in Turkish Romani/Romany dance. She has studied with
some amazing mentors, notably to 9/8: Reyhan Tusuz, Artemis Mourat, Elizabeth
Strong, Dalia Carella and Tayyar Akdeniz among many others.

Mike Gregian is a master musician with 35 years of professional experience,
performing at belly dance hot spots, including the Averof, the Athenian Corner
and the Middle East Restaurant. He's a drummer as well as clarinetist and
saxophonist. Mike is also an accomplished teacher, conducting workshops, group
classes and private lessons.

$40 for one workshop
