Rosanna returns to Sounthern Ontario after spending 2 years studying and performing in San Francisco. There, she studied with a who's who of bellydance: Suhaila and Jamila Salimpour, FCBD, Jill Parker, Zoe Jakes, Rachel Brice, Mira Betz, Cera Byer, and Amy Sigil. In California, Rosanna also had the opportunity to expand her movement repertoir outside of bellydance, into vinyasa yoga, breakdance, house, and locking. She is known for her unique interpretation of tribal fusion, incorporating elements of vintage jazz dances as well as hip-hop, while referencing traditional styles of Middle Eastern dance. Rosanna continually strives to dance outside of her own box, and fully admits to having dance ADD.

Gerard Valdez, aka G Cue, has been playing his own brand of chunky, funky house in Toronto and surroundings for years and is a major threat on the decks. He is cofounder of Raw Soul and a regular at underground house jams put on by Nine, Boogie Inc., and Bounce. Gerard has been djing for 16 years of his life, learning and being inspired by Toronto locals as well as visiting stars like Mark Farina and Derrick Carter. Gerard has also played Harvest Festival, Promise Cherry Beach parties, Circa, and Footwork, to name just a few of his musical appearances and milestones.

12-2pm: Yoga and fast technique.
Following a vinyasa warmup, we're going to drill drill drill. We'll be working on improving quality and speed of hip and upper body movements and adding footwork. Multiple level options will be given. Bring a towl and be prepared to sweat.

230-430: Technique contin. and flexibility training
More sweating. We will take advantage of our supple, warm muscles to safely and effectively increase our flexibility. We will be discussing techniques and practices specifically for helping those of us who were not born flexible!! Do you stretch and stretch but don't see any improvement? This is for you.

Saturday October 24th (Mad For Dance 263 Adelaide St. West)
1230-230: Fusion, movement invention, and creating choreography
We will be doing a combination of discussion and exercises on fusing dance styles, expanding your movement vocabulary, and creating solo choreography. Participants should bring "ideas in progress" for fusion, movements, and choreographies and be open to group discussion. This workshop is geared for dancers who either want to start performing solo, who want to improve their current solo choreographic work, and also for those who want to break out of using only a specific set of movements.

3-5: Flapper fusion
My dance-baby: a combination of vintage jazz dance and bellydance, completely fabricated from my own imagination. I will be teaching this style as an example of the principles discussed in the earlier workshop. Don't know what on earth this could be? See my video from Tribal Fest 2008:

Sunday October 25th (Mad For Dance 263 Adelaide St. West)
12-2: Funk styles for bellydancers - Funkifying your bellydance and bellydancifying your funk.
We will be going over how to utilize bellydance technique to create illusory effects in popping, contracting different muscle groups to create a hit, breaking down boogaloo rolls in bellydance terminology, and flipping arm waves inside and out. I will also be discussing different dance styles that are commonly performed with popping, and the distinction between popping and locking.

230-430: Slow technique and flexibility.
This technique section will focus on drilling SLOOOOOOOWWWWWLLLLLLYYYY. We will also be doing yoga and other excercises to work on balance. We will end with more stretches (expanding on what we did on Friday).

Okay, this might be considered spam (sorry if it is) but I am on the lookout for potential Grad Schools, and one of those is Boston University. I was hoping to find out what it's like over yonder on the East Coast. I visited Boston earlier this year and I have been checking out the classifieds for apartments (which are freaking EXPENSIVE!!!!) in Boston. So, what's it like? Is there actually affordable housing in the area? What should I know about the area/state/etc?

Introduction to Turkish Romani 12:30pm–2:15pm The Romani people (sometimes
derogatorily called "gypsies") are a group that migrated from India to every
corner of Europe, the Middle East, and parts of Asia. Turkish Romani dance is
characterized by its attitude, directness, powerful gestures, and the 9/8
rhythm.

9/8 Percussion • Romani and Karsilama 2:30pm–4:15pm Mike will break down how to
play 9/8 rhythms (Romani and Karsilama) and then play his clarinet for us to
drum and zill along. This workshop is a special chance to learn/practice
percussion skills to LIVE music! Dancers are encouraged to take this workshop:
zills welcome, loaner drums available.

I am so excited to announce (and pleased to present) the amazing Lee Ali will be coming to New England in September, and we've arranged for this living legend of the dance to bring us two workshops: Gutsy Greek Bellydance and Trance Dancing! Workshops will be on September 19th - working on details for a show, hopefully the night before!

10:00am - 12pm : Gutsy Greek Bellydance
Greeks are emotional dancers. These natural storytellers of the dance world project raw sensuality, bold strength and heartbreaking sorrow, often in a single dance. This workshop will cover 3 main topics including: belly dance, folk dance, and understanding and interpreting Greek music. We will explore the differences between Greek, Egyptian, and American styles of bellydance including costumes, attitudes, and even cultural taboos.

The first hour of class will cover specific gestures that give Greek dance its signature passionate flair. The Drunken Sailor and Zorba-the-Greek are just a few famous folk images we will draw from to authentically flavor our dance. A clear explanation of Greek bouzouki music will be given throughout the class, along with a peppering of cultural tidbits that will fire the imagination and allow students to interpret their dance with “feeling.” In the second hour, we will cover Greek-style Bellydance. The Greek name for bellydance is Tsiftetelli (pronounced "Tseef tuh TELL lee." with a little snake hiss at the beginning of the word). A 3-part bellydance routine will be taught, with a bold, fast entrance, a slow section just for belly rolls, and a leave-em-wanting-more finale! This 3-part routine may be performed as a stage-ready mini show, or blended with other styles to create a Greek-fusion piece.

This class is recommended for Tribal Fusion, ATS, or Cabaret style bellydancers who want to bring a new ethnic flavor to their dance. Whether you are planning a dreamy vacation to the blue waters and sizzling night life of the Mediterranean or simply dining at your local Greek taverna, this class will inspire you to dance and shout, “OPA!” Please bring a veil and finger cymbals.

1:00-3:00pm : Trance Dancing
Trance dancing is a personal journey into altered states of consciousness and creativity. Light trancing is the ultimate stress reliever. It is a Zen exercise for learning to “let go” and dance mindlessly in the moment. As we advance, deep trance is a powerful, mysterious tool for harvesting self-knowledge and spiritual ecstasy. We will explore trance from 3 different angles. First as an ancient ritual, second, as a performance art for dancers, and third, as a traditional women’s social dance. Segment 1 of the workshop will introduce simple techniques for descending into trance as well as a rhythm drills and music suggestions for practicing trance on your own. In segment 2 students learn a 2-minute choreography inspired by the Egyptian Zar, a traditional ritual for healing spirit-possession. This routine is a theatrical version of a real Zar and may be performed as part of a tribal fusion or gothic dance piece. Segment 3 will explore group trance dancing. Part African, part Arab, these spicy movements and interactions are based on Moroccan women’s dances. This is the Moroccan version of a mosh pit! We will rock, spin, jump, flick, and shake with abandonment. Bring kneepads and eat lightly before class. This is a rhythmic and hypnotic workout!

Where: The workshops will take place on Saturday, September 19th, from 10am-3pm (with a lunch break) at World Dance & Music Center,
925 Central Ave, 2nd floor, Pawtucket, RI 02861. There is ample free parking on the street around the building.

How Much?: Both workshops, by September 5th, $65, or $35 each.
After September 5th, $75 for both, or $40 each.*

About Lee Ali: Lee Ali was voted Favorite Ethnic Dancer and Golden Belly Award Winner, 2008. She's a multicultural shapeshifter who bridges the boundaries between East and West, modern and traditional. She's both a riveting performer and respected a folklorist in Moroccan and pan Arabic dance. With a Moroccan dancer Mom and a Turkish drummer Dad, Lee was born to dance and drum. She began as a child performer in 1970's, the golden era of Old Style belly dance. At age 13, she became a "working dancer" performing 5-nights a week for 10-solid years. On stage, she's delivered more than 2,000 dance and drumming performances in theater, festivals, cabaret and film, both in the States and abroad in Morocco, Turkey, Greece and Egypt.

At age 20, Lee became director of her own dance studio in Brooklyn, New York, where she perfected her colorful teaching style and her commitment to building community through dance. In 1996, she produced the documentary film, Belly Dancing In America: Importing Middle Eastern Dance. Her troupe, The Berber Ballet, is a dance and drum ensemble specializing in 6/8 rhythms and theatricalized trance dances. Lee holds a bachelors degree in Psychology from UC, Irvine and is currently writing a book on Moroccan dance and trance rituals. A dedicated "dance-oholic," she vows to dance 'til death.

CLASS DESCRIPTIONS:
Intermediate (Open Level ) with Denise - Tribal Fusion: 6:30-8pm
Building on the foundation of Beginners Level I and II (or equivalent experience), Tribal Belly Dance: Intermediate (Open Level) introduces the student to the Tribal Fusion style. Inspired by the hard edge, industrial sounds of current hip-hop and rap music of Palestine and Lebanon, this session will focus on the heat of extremes. Heavily technique based, movements will range from new asymmetric gooey movements to hip-hop based brash, sharp movements of the underground. Movements will have a keen eye on detail, pulling in small yet powerful additions to the foundation movements that reflect the breaks, stops and layers inherent in hip-hop, techno and industrial music we’ve come to love while tying it together with a smooth, sinuous, juicy tribal flow. Students will end the session having learned the Vadalna choreography to “Splinter Factory” by Filastine. At the end of the semester, students will have the opportunity to perform at Vadalna's Winter Gala (not required).

Beginners (Open Level) American Tribal Style (ATS) with Shakti & Kali Das:

Learn the sacred art of Bellydance through technique, muscle development, musicality, and dance movement!

Tribal Style belly dance is a fusion style inspired by traditional Raqs Sharqi and folkloric dance movements from India, Central Asia, the Middle East, North Africa and Spain. In this series, students will be introduced to the foundations of American Tribal Style (ATS) as made famous by Carolena Nericcio, director of Fat Chance Belly Dance. In this class students will familiarize themselves with ATS vocabulary and learn foundational movements through proper body alignment, basic movement technique, individual isolations, drills, fun combinations, and strengthening exercises that lie at the core of tribal belly dance's powerful yet 'ooey-gooey' movement. Additionally each student will learn to lead and follow the group through Tribal Group Improvisation (TGI), a cornerstone of the ATS style. This encourages a spirit of team-work, awareness and cooperation, all parts of being a "tribe". All sizes, ages, and dance abilities welcome!

At the end of the semester, students will have the opportunity to perform at Vadalna's Winter Gala (not required).

After a 2 year hiatus from the East Coast, spent training in SF, I'm moving back to the great white north in September. Since its been SOOO long since I've either taught or performed in Toronto and I've done SOOO much since I've been in San Fran, I've decided to pull together an extravaganza eleganza of dance madness. I'm packing in as much as possible into 3 days of teaching, as well as throwing a party with performances by moi, and beats courtesy of 2 of my favourite DJs, Nick McAlister and Gerard Valdez.

The details of the workshop have been sorted out and the schedule is as follows:

Friday October 23rd (Aurora Live Studios, 392 Queen Street E in Toronto)
12-2pm: Yoga and fast technique.
Following a vinyasa warmup, we're going to drill drill drill. We'll be working on improving quality and speed of hip and upper body movements and adding footwork. Multiple level options will be given. Bring a towl and be prepared to sweat.

230-430: Technique contin. and flexibility training
More sweating. We will take advantage of our supple, warm muscles to safely and effectively increase our flexibility. We will be discussing techniques and practices specifically for helping those of us who were not born flexible!! Do you stretch and stretch but don't see any improvement? This is for you.

Saturday October 24th (Mad For Dance 263 Adelaide St. West)
1230-230: Fusion, movement invention, and creating choreography
We will be doing a combination of discussion and exercises on fusing dance styles, expanding your movement vocabulary, and creating solo choreography. Participants should bring "ideas in progress" for fusion, movements, and choreographies and be open to group discussion. This workshop is geared for dancers who either want to start performing solo, who want to improve their current solo choreographic work, and also for those who want to break out of using only a specific set of movements.

3-5: Flapper fusion
My dance-baby: a combination of vintage jazz dance and bellydance, completely fabricated from my own imagination. I will be teaching this style as an example of the principles discussed in the earlier workshop. Don't know what on earth this could be? See my video from Tribal Fest 2008:

Sunday October 25th (Mad For Dance 263 Adelaide St. West)
12-2: Funk styles for bellydancers - Funkifying your bellydance and bellydancifying your funk.
We will be going over how to utilize bellydance technique to create illusory effects in popping, contracting different muscle groups to create a hit, breaking down boogaloo rolls in bellydance terminology, and flipping arm waves inside and out. I will also be discussing different dance styles that are commonly performed with popping, and the distinction between popping and locking.

230-430: Slow technique and flexibility.
This technique section will focus on drilling SLOOOOOOOWWWWWLLLLLLYYYY. We will also be doing yoga and other excercises to work on balance. We will end with more stretches (expanding on what we did on Friday).

Now accepting applications for performers--due to the limited number of performance slots and high interest in performing, I cannot guarantee that every applicant will be able to perform. (In fact, I can pretty much guarantee that not every applicant will be able to perform, which is why I will be holding a more informal gothic hafli in spring 2010, open on a first come, first serve basis.) Selections will be made first and foremost on the basis of presenting a diverse program with a variety of styles and artistic visions. Applications should include:

1. Your dance name and real name, if different (troupes, provide troupe name and a main contact person)

2. Complete contact information

3. Your performance concept, including music choice, 6 minutes maximum --->remember, this is a *gothic* event! You
don't have to be a regular performer of gothic belly dance, but your concept for Raks Spooki should have something
gothic about it.

4. Link to video clip online, or contact me about mailing me a DVD. If I have seen you perform before this is not
necessary, but please do not assume that if we were in a show together that I was able to see you--check first.
This does not have to be video of the project you have in mind for Raks Spooki but should be representative of your
dancing in general.

Tempest and Asharah will be presenting two complementary workshops reflecting the dual mental and physical nature of our dance form. Tempest's Dancing on the Right Side of the Brain will take the participant through a series of exercises to unlock the creative spirit and engage the right side of the brain. Asharah's Pops, Locks and Tick Tocks will introduce the participants to Asharah's signature tribal fusion style, influenced by robots, experimental electronic music and of course poppin' and lockin'. The Art of Making It Weird (Slow, Lovely, and Strange)
We are going to ride the edge between exquisite and strange in this slow movement workshop. All that ooey gooey stuff that is so fun and delicious to watch and do will be focused on, using elements from the head down through to the fingertips. We will be focusing on super slow isolations, extreme undulations, and upper body technique. Hand work, elbow work, wrist work, posture, oblique strengthening (to get that horizontal pull that makes mayas and hip slides so exquisite and strange), belly rolls with emphasis on stomach musculature. And of course the elusive flutter!

Rakadu, famous for their storytelling and improvisational bellydance, is and has been the perfect fountainhead for Alyssum's performance style. In addition to bellydance, Alyssum is accomplished in yoga, front-bending contortion, rhythm tap, and has many years of training in dance forms from around the world besides. While she lived in New England (2004-2008), she honed her own style of tribal bellydance by incorporating her contortion abilities and sharpening her isolations. Tribal Grooves: Sunday, June 14th - 12:00-2:00pm
Tribal with attitudes! Add spice to your dance steps... the trancey-ness of North African grooves, the prayerfulness of Indian mudras using hands and poses, the spiciness of Spanish influences using your big skirt with some added sass. We will learn some moves and combos, and then work with a partner or two, changing formations. This is for intermediate/advanced level dancers please.

Tribal Trance: Sunday, April 19th - 2:30-4:00pm
Different ways and methods of using dance, with the tribal belly dance background, for trance and healing. This is your time to explore your dance, free your dance, dance with the elements, dance with your sisters, shake your booty, chant and meditate, a bit or ritual and prayer in the tribal belly dance way! Some tribal experience necessary!

Graceful Arms & Torso workshop with Neefa of Khafif Music & Dance

The Class: Effortless grace is built though combining core strength and body awareness with movement. The class will focus on building grace through combining and learning all three. Dynamic and fluid arm movements garnered from ethnic dance forms with a special emphasis on accompanying torso work will be taught. These movements and exercises are the perfect accompaniment for building your belly dance repertoire and laying a smooth foundation of elegance to your dance.

This class will be reviewing some of the concepts and exercises from Neefa's last workshop in NEPA and then will take it to a new level applying them to exciting combinations.

<Attendance at Neefa's last workshop is not mandatory to attend this one. Students should at least have a good working knowledge of basic bellydance moves for this workshop.>

Knock 'em dead!
What works on stage, you ask, especially those bigger ones with the fancy lighting, back stages, and sound guys? This class is for those wanting an understanding of what really carries all the way to the back rows. Get ready for big fantastic whip-sharp moves supplied with clear and concise explanations for graceful and flawless execution. Tips and concepts to make you hip work bigger, sharper, and more polished (thus more effective on stage), and how to improve speed while not loosing clarity of movement.

The Art of Making It Weird (Slow, Lovely, and Strange)
We are going to ride the edge between exquisite and strange in this slow movement workshop. All that ooey gooey stuff that is so fun and delicious to watch and do will be focused on, using elements from the head down through to the fingertips. We will be focusing on super slow isolations, extreme undulations, and upper body technique. Hand work, elbow work, wrist work, posture, oblique strengthening (to get that horizontal pull that makes mayas and hip slides so exquisite and strange), belly rolls with emphasis on stomach musculature. And of course the elusive flutter!

ABOUT ZOE JAKES…
Zoe is a proud member of The Indigo, which recently was on the road touring their new show Le Serpent Rouge. She has been touring with Bellydance Superstars since the fall of 2005 and can be seen performing on their new Tribal Fusions DVD. Her first DVD, a drum solo choreography, will be coming out this winter. Combining talents with David Satori and Tommy Cappel to form the band Beats Antique, Zoe has just release their second album with CIA records, Collide. When not with The Indigo, she tours with The Yard Dogs Road Show, a cartoon circus sideshow of wacky dimension, and has been seen tearing it up with the Extra Action Marching Band.
An innovative dancer, Zoe has been said to have her own unique take on Tribal bellydance. She takes her influence from Art Nouveau, tango, Breakdance, and Indian classical dance as well as all things vaudeville. Zoe was nominated for Zaghareets best interpretive artist 2007, and The Indigo recently won best troupe 2008. She loves unicorns and has never once doubted their existence.

DC/Baltimore Area Belly Dancing Training for the Disabled Beginner

I'm looking to attend beginner belly dancing classes in late spring or this summer. I would start sooner, but I'm still severely disabled and in a wheelchair; however by last spring/early summer, I should be ready to start ! YAY!

In addition to taking classes, I'd like to offer my services as a beaded jewelry and accessesory maker. You can either choose from what I have on hand or I will design a piece just for you! Also, if you don't want to pay for it, I'm all about trading my products for other items or services.

I am *SO proud* to announce that I have been accepted as a FCBD Sister Studio! This means that I am both certified for General Skills/ General ATS training as well as Teacher training and have been selected to uphold ATS 100% in its pure form as taught and presented by Ms Caolena Nericcio and Fat Chance Belly Dance.

From FCBD.com: "Sister Studios are graduates of General Skills for ATS, ATS Teacher Training and exclusive FCBD Teacher Training. Cabaret Macabre: Saturday, April 18th - 12:00-2:00pm
Boring dance routines got you down? Are you looking for something to resuscitate your creativity? Well, let Zafira help you breathe life into your dance practice. Drama, musicality and technique are addressed in this workshop. First, we will build several tribal fusion combinations that incorporate contemporary dance with bellydance torso work- focusing on technique and alignment. Then, we will use these combos to experiment with musicality, emotion, and nuanced gestures in order to bring these young Frankensteins to life.

COMBO-Nation!: Saturday, April 18th - 2:30-4:30pm
You Love ‘em. We Love ‘em. Dance Combinations are a great way to pack in technique and signature stylizations in a short workshop timeframe. COMBO-nation will cover tried and true Zafira classic combos that they've used in some of their most popular performances, as well as new and "in the works" combos that'll push you both physically and creatively. Bring your note pad & yoga mat fora brief warm up.

Shimmy-TASTIC!: Sunday, April 19th - 12:00-2:00pm
Take your shimmies to the next level! In this workshop we will cover the classic 3/4 shimmy, with walking, layering exercises and drills. We will cover 4/4 shimmies as well, to better understand and get better control of our hips. We will also play with varying shimmies from old to new school styles. To finish off our workshop we'll cover some unique combos utilizing what we learned, Zafira style!

Supah' Saucy: Sunday, April 19th - 2:30-4:30pm
Kicks, spins, long extensions and locks are the signature of Zafira’s current repertoire. This workshop presents some fancy footwork and spins within several dance combinations. Couple these saucy moves with evocative music and emotion, and you are at the core of Zafira’s “steal-your-heart” style of bellydance.

*Be sure to bring water, a light snack, yoga mat or towel, and a few extra dollars to spend in the Souk (vendors will only available on Saturday!).

Workshop: Refinement, Alignment, Strength and Attentiveness
Tribal Fusion is an evolving genre reflecting common denominators between North African, Arab, Persian and Turkish secular dance traditions. These classical dance traditions reflect the aesthetic of women's dances and movements dating back over 7,000 years to practices of matriarchal traditions. The dance is presently transforming through interactions with new technology in world music, cultural dialogue between the East and West, and intense international interest in American hip hop and electronic music. The resulting movement values a nominal use of space, percussive hip work, lyrical arm and torso work, and emphasizes musical interpretation over movement bravado.

Donna's workshop summarizes and details the most efficient tools for unleashing the intelligence of the body in dance. Topics covered include breathing techniques, optimal alignment, muscle efficiency and building longevity through precision and strength. Rather than focusing on choreography, Donna will detail cross-training tips from various classical traditions that create a sophisticated and polished dancer. Known for her candor, humor and precision, Donna's thoughtful approach to movement offers completely new perspectives.

Though women many dominate the performance arena for the genre, men are absolutely welcome as participants. Donna's classes are typically vigorous and she recommends athletic attire, yoga mats and bare feet (knee pads optional). Donna respectfully requests that participants with previous injuries or medical concerns please consult her via email before attending for an honest assessment of risk factors.

About Donna:
Donna Mejia is a choreographer, lecturer, teacher, administrator, and performer specializing in contemporary dance, traditions of the African Diaspora, and new fusion traditions in world electronica. She taught at Colorado College for 10 years and was Director of the Colorado College International Summer Dance Festival for the last half of her term.
For twelve years she served as managing director of the award-winning Harambee African Dance Ensemble of CU-Boulder. She continues to teach, choreograph and perform Modern dance, Improvisiation, Hip Hop, Jazz, Arabic Tribal Fusion and traditional dances of the African Diaspora for Colorado College as well as colleges and dance festivals internationally. Donna is an authorized instructor of Brazilian Silvestre Modern Dance Technique.

What is Triboluminescence? It's a celebration of dance and music,
light and luminescence, held on December 13th all day, to Benefit the
Dragon's Egg Solar Project, and Oxfam International. The Dragon's Egg
and Mystic Paper Beasts are raising funds to build photovoltaic solar
panels for the studio, and hope the bellydance community can help!
There will be 7 (yes 7!) mini workshops taught by middle-eastern dance
artists from around the region.

Come enjoy the Beautiful and magical Egg, full of surprises,
throughout the day! In the evening there will be a gala performance
featuring dances of light, energy and luminescence. And of course lots
of music and open dancing; bring your instruments and your dancing feet!

Workshop descriptions:

-Bharata Natyam with Shajara
This workshop will introduce basic steps (adavus), and hand gestures
(mudras) of Bharata Natyam, a classical dance form from South India
known for its combination of rhythm, intricate hand gestures,
expressions, narratives, facial and eye movements (Nritya) and story
telling (Natya). We will also explore Bharata Natyam steps and poses
to incorporate in your own world dance fusion.

-Hatha Yoga with Marya Ursin
Stand in the heart of the Dragon and take peace: Yoga: class is
suitable for all and is a general level class. Bring a mat, and dress
in comfortable clothing. The instructor asks that the students modify
the class as needed, honouring their bodies/minds in the changing moment.

-CORE: Concepts and Tools for Fusion Dance with Aradia of Zingari East
"I want to do something different with my dance, but I'm not sure what."
In this workshop, we will touch on several useful tools which will
strengthen our private practice; provide a fresh perspective on
choreography and combinations; plant seeds for the execution of
effortless improvisation; promote the evolution of our base technique
into personalized elements of fusion. Prior dance experience will be
very helpful in this workshop, but is not required. Standard
movements, present in all forms of BellyDance will be used in their
original forms, and then layered, warped, twisted, drilled and
personalized. We will move from our comfort level, using different
theories of movement and non-traditional music.

-BellyLatin Fusion Workshop with Sahari
BellyLatin Fusion is a crossing of cultures, a creative outlet and a
stimulating form of exercise for women of all ages, shapes and sizes.
Sahari's BellyLatin fusion is a revolutionary dance style that
combines intriguing bellydance moves with sizzling Latin rhythms and
steps. Sahari offers a non-traditional approach to these dance forms;
one that works the entire body. Learn exciting combos; work on body
and facial expressions. Come enjoy the amusing music!...experience the
fusion! This workshop is appropriate for all levels and types of dancers!

-Turkish Slow and Fast 9/8 Workshop with Erzulie
The 9/8 rhythm is often played very fast but is also played slinky and
slow. Come learn moves for both tempos! Bring a full skirt.

-Middle Eastern Drumming with Dwayne Green
Rhythm is the heartbeat of music and dancing, and is Middle-Eastern
music is rich in its varied rhythms. In this workshop we will learn
some of the traditional rhythms of the Middle-East. Bring your
dumbeks, riqs, zils and frame drums!

-Sly Eyes with Karina Khan
Karina Khan, known for her emotive facial expression, will guide you
through techniques to let you eyes speak through your dance. Your gaze
is as valuable a tool as any other part when embodying the music in
movement. Two short combos will be taught that use our eyes to dance
the rhythm and melody with the hips, arms, and torso.

Hello everyone... we, Willow and I, are proud to present this coming years Hafla and Show with Workshops by ASHARAH!!!

Just wanted to share with our fellow North Easter's the deadlines for pre-registration ahead of the game!

The hafla and show are $25 if pre-registered by March 1st or $30 at the door. Those taking both workshops receive a complimentary show ticket. Those taking one workshop and performing get a discounted rate.

If you would like to perform in the show, participation in at least one workshop is required. Pre-registration for performance by March 1st.

Dear friends, for those of you who happen to be in NYC on Nov.1 and 2, please join us for our Venus Uprising semi-annual event. This fall our fantasy bellydance concert theme is Tarot - every dance portrays archetypal images based on Tarot cards. It's going to be a beautiful and unique show, with a spectacular array of solos and group numbers. All pieces are very different: We are not a dance company, each number is conceived and choreographed by the artists who present it, so the variety of styles and creative thinking is incredible.

We'll have large-scale theatrical compositions, like "Wheel of Fortune" (the story of Cleopatra) and "Lust" by Sarah Skinner, Kazja and The Sisters of Salome; Tribal / Tribal fusion numbers by Sarah Locke's "Alchemy Dance Theater", Fayzah and her group "Aurea Dancers," Irina, Tribal Fusion / Gothic "BellyCraft," Alicia and Heather from Miami FL.

Over the years the troupe has multiplied from 3 to 13 members, performed everywhere from Las Vegas to Lollapalooza, embarked on multiple U.S. tours and launched their first tour of Europe. The final show of their 10th Anniversary Tour will be in NYC. It's their opportunity to thank everyone for their support over the years.

Who Is Bellyqueen?

DIRECTIONS - From Rte 7, take Rte. 125 W / 30 S in the middle of Middlebury. Keep on Rte. 30 (There's a turn to 125 on the right; don't go there.) About 1/2-3/4 mile from Rte 7, there's a marked entrance to the Center For the Arts parking lot on the left. Go in there and keep to the right; head to the most southerly part of the lot. The CFA is the building on the Southwest corner of the lot. Enter the door that faces the lot.

Mira's Monday night class will be in the dance rehearsal space - the first door on the left after you enter the building.
The Wednesday night lecture will be in the Dance theatre, which is further down the hall. (I'm sure there will be signs/posters to guide you.)

What is Triboluminescence?

It's a celebration of dance and music, light and luminescence, held on
December 13th all day, to Benefit the Dragon's Egg Solar Project, and
Oxfam International.

As you may or may not know, Dragon's Egg is the rehearsal and retreat
studio owned and run by the Mystic Paper Beasts (Dan Potter and Marya
Ursin). The Egg and the Beasts are a non-profit organization and
depend mainly on donations, in addition to income from events at the
Egg in order to keep the building running as a resource for artists.
The Beasts are extremely generous with the space, and without them,
many of the wonderful events we have been able to have over the last
several years would not have been possible.
As it is for everybody, one of the major expenses for the egg is
energy (electric and oil for the hot water radiant heat under the
floor). The Egg is currently raising funds to install solar panels on
the barn, in order to offset some of the energy costs of the space and
they are looking for donations towards this cause. I would love for
the bellydance community to be able to put some real effort towards
this, since the Egg has done so much for us.

I had nothing to do with getting her here, but I'm very pleased to announce that Mira Betz will be giving a lecture at Middlebury College (topic TBA) the evening of Oct. 8th. When I found out she was coming, I emailed her to find out if she'll be available for private lessons while she's here - she will! - on Tuesday, Oct. 7th!

I've reserved a suitable room on campus for the afternoon of Tuesday, Oct. 7th to be available for anyone who wants to line up a private lesson with Mira. (She has no transportation while she's here, so even if you have your own space, you'd still have to come here to pick her up - it seemed easier just to set up a space here.) You can email her at mira@miramania.com to set up a time if you're interested. (Her fee is $75 per hour.) I'm guessing she'd be willing to work with a small group (2-3-4) as well as privates.

Once you're on MIra's schedule, you can send me a PM and I can send you directions to the reserved classroom.

(This is a couple days after her Boston workshop - Oct. 4th and 5th.)

Workshop 1: Fluid Upper Body - Chest isolations, shoulder work, head embellishments, and fluid arms and hands will be the focus of this workshop. We will begin and end with a gentle yoga flow and stretch to help lengthen, strech and strengthen the muscles needed for strong upper body isolations. A yoga mat is helpful, but not required.

Workshop 2: Tribal Fusion Choreography: Learn an original choreography by Kami, complete with slinky isolations, shimmies, turns, layers, locks, ticks, breaks and more.. a la fusion style! This class is open to all, but some belly dance experience will be helpful. Water and a dance journal are essential.

This event is non-profit! Admission at door goes directly to costs with any profit being donated to the Susan G. Koman Breast Cancer foundation. The hall is beautiful and very large…think wedding size. Plenty of room to mix, mingle, dance, eat and be merry. Feel free to contribute more to the fund because we all know how important ‘the girls’ are to our community.

Just when you thought the Halloween parties were over…we will be throwing (a week late) a party celebrating ‘ Los Dias De Los Muertos ‘ (Day of the Dead) to celebrate life and our community. This will be a very special Hafla featuring performances by our community, a drum circle, a photographer, videographer, DJ, vendors and games.

The facility has a ridiculously large hall for performance, seating and eating areas and a drumming circle as well as unlimited room for vendors. It offers three bathrooms, one for men, one for women and one for handicap accessibility. There is also a very large coat room that will be used as a dressing room. It’s beautiful!!!!

Performances: Open to everyone in the community, beginner to pro. We’d like to do 20 acts max. Performance time should not to exceed 5 minutes (we love you all and would like to see more of you but we want to fit as many acts in as we can). Plus we have one small requirement…..Fringe Benefit (NJBD’s host troupe) would like to see YOUR twist. Do a song or style you have always wanted to do, better yet, team up with another soloist or troupe that you have always wanted to dance with. Let loose have fun and please…keep it in a manner that is PG. No fire guys…but feel free to get creative with other props. We are proud to have Anka Kusu providing the music for our drumming circle. They are fabulous and we know you will enjoy them!

We will have a professional photographer coming in to do photographs. She has done photography for all styles of dance and sporting events and currently owns her own studio here in NJ that is very well known. She will be available for the performances and for individual portraits by request. Details to follow.

We are looking for a videographer for performances. Step forward if you are interested and can promise a professional quality video. The Videographer will deal with the performers directly negotiating costs for taping. Cost to us is $25 (admission included); the rest of the profit is yours.

We also are in need of a DJ. We have some equipment but need someone available for the performances and to spin music to rock out to thru out the evening. If you agree to volunteer, you will get in free and we will shower you with adoration and affection…we may even make you your favorite dish.

Vendors…we need vendors…we have unlimited room for vendors (that’s how big this place is!). Cost will be $25 for a table (admission included in price) and you are alleviated from the burden of bringing any food…unless, of course, you want to. ;)

Most Creative Performance:
What performance do you feel had the most interesting or unique twist? Audience choice, winners will receive a very special prize.

Family Dance:
So you think you can dance huh? Well let’s see if your significant other can shake it in a coin scarf? Daring partners are invited up to the stage at some point in the night to see if they have been paying attention all these years. Children are welcome too! Let’s see who has the most talented family!

Limbo contest:
How low can you go baby? Worked hard for that flexibility…show it off and win a prize!

Finally: A ballot will be available for participants to fill out. We want to know who should be applauded in ’08. Vote for your favorite (instructor, performer, promoter, vendor, restaurant, musician etc) in NJ and the tri-state. Nominees in each category will be posted in our NJ Tribe for final voting. Winners will be published on our web site.

Also joining us is Fayzah with her group of Tribal Fusion students The Aurea Dancers.

Integrating Elegant and Technical Movement for Tribal Fusion Bellydance
Experience Level: Intermediate beginner and above.
This workshop will help you refine your technique and add elegance to your bellydance movement. While sharp pops and locks are an essential part of the tribal dancer's repertoire, grace and polish are equally, if not more, important for conveying expression and feeling from the stage to the audience. Asharah will lead students through an intense warm-up that will prepare the body for fluid arm-work, well-defined isolations, and dramatic extension. We will drill smooth bellydance movements (such as arm waves, interior hip circles, and undulations) and hard contraction movements (such as chest locks and hip work in various directions), and Asharah will teach a short combination using these moves in a choreography, emphasizing flow and musical interpretation.

"Between The Veils" with Tempest - 2:15-4:15pm (2 hours!)
Discover the darker side of veilwork, from dramatic entrances, intricate and intimate veilplay, to exiting with a flourish that will leave 'em wanting more. Learn to truly dance with your veil and tame it's inner cat, see it as a partner and not a prop. We'll cover proper veil technique, fusion movements and accents, pros and cons of materials and presentations, and making effective use of your veil. Be sure to bring at least one three yard veil-rectangular or circular. Can be silk, chiffon, or other light, flowing material. All levels welcome.

Huge thanks to all the ladies who came to sweat with me yesterday at Lotus Rising!

I had a great time and like I said, I'm totally impressed your technique level! You ladies rock!

Also I think there are still spots left in Suhaila's Boston workshop at the end of August--and the choreography she's teaching is to "Dark Veil," which is the first song I played yesterday in our warm-up. It's really hot and definitely not something you want to miss.

Tribal Fusion Technique and Combos 12-3pm
Strong technique and dynamic combinations are trademarks of modern Tribal Fusion Bellydance. In "Tribal Fusion Technique and Combos," Marisa leads students through a muscular breakdown of a variety of bellydance movements and then strings them together to create exciting Tribal Style combinations. This three-hour workshop includes a thorough warm-up and lots of drilling, so be sure to bring water and be prepared to sweat! Experience with the Suhaila and Jamila Salimpour techniques helpful but not required.

Who:
Marisa has studied dance since she was a child growing up in Hawaii. Her dance background has included classical western dance forms, Polynesian, west African, Latin and of course bellydance. Her current dance studies are primarily with Suhaila Salimpour, in whose format Marisa is level 2 certified and with whose companies she trains and performs. Marisa has been performing professionally since 2004. Performance highlights include a 2007 performance as a Tunisian Pot Dancer in the Salimpours' company Bal Anat, Duet performances with Britt at the 2006 and 2007 Las Vegas Bellydance Intensives and a 2007 solo performance at the Suhaila Salimpour Gala Show in Toronto. Marisa performs and teaches in Las Vegas, Nevada and around the world. She is currently participating in Suhaila's Teacher Training Program and has assisted Suhaila in teaching classes and workshops in France, Italy, Egypt, Canada and the United States. Marisa is a certified vinyasa yoga instructor trained in 2006 at The White Lotus Foundation. In May of 2008 she began studies for a STOTT pilates teaching certification. - Have you asked yourself any of the following questions?
I want to do something different with my dance, but I’m not sure what.
My base is in Egyptian Cabaret, but I really want to try/get into Fusion.
How can I translate what I already know into a more modern/alternative/fusion dance?
How do I make a Fusion Performance idea look as good in person as it does in my head?

In this workshop, we will touch on several useful tools which will:
* Strengthen our private practice

Prior dance experience will be very helpful in this workshop, but is not required. * Learn to separate your basic butterfly, weave, and corkscrew into a funky groove!
* Learn how to not look like a broken record by spinning some transitions designed to be tricks themselves!

Who:
Aradia is the Artistic Director and a founding member of Zingari East Fusion Dance, based in Rhode Island. Since its inception in 2000, the collective has sought to push the creative envelope with their performance pieces, incorporating various styles and fusions of Middle Eastern, Modern, Jazz, Hip Hop, Rave and Break-dance as well as showcasing the talents of its ever-evolving members who spin fire and glow poi, hula hoop performers, ballet dancers, drummers, comedy/variety acts and whomever else might want to jump on our wagon and go for a ride to far off and exotic places.

Joshua Lapan ’s soul was ripped from his body by a higher power and replaced by Sally The Altar Boy in Rhode Island about 7 years ago. After a brief solo career Sally met the stygian queen Aradia and joined the tribal dance collective Zingari East. Since then Sally has performed in clubs along the eastern seaboard with the cult sensation - using New England as a springboard for their plans of world domination. His performing and dancing is will known to cause shock, panic, awe, hallucinations in the elderly and children, the sudden need to buy glow-sticks and in extreme cases it has been linked to a state of euphoric epiphany.

Integrating Tarot and dance as a spiritual practice - Sugati
Throughout history, the tarot has traveled from sacred oracle to sideshow attraction, and then back again to an introspective practice in which we can better know ourselves. Within this workshop we will encounter how our dance can be a healing practice, one that opens a channel from our bodies to our spirits, while still incorporating the mind. Within this relaxed environment we will use improvisational Middle Eastern-inspired dance to power a connection, forming a relationship between the movements that we’ve learned and drilled as dancers and the ancient art of reading the tarot. Revealing how powerful it can be for our bodies to meet and take part within our spirituality.

Circadian, finding your inner and outer rhythm - Katie Bertsche
Rhythms fill our lives, from our waking and sleeping, walking, eating, coming and going...tides, the seasons, day and night, our habits and instincts join us with all dancing living things. And of course, Rhythm is the heart of bellydance. We'll explore together different ways to hear rhythm in music, and how we can translate that into movement. Is the music fast? slow? syncopated? even? Do you express the rhythm in yourself or can you have a conversation with it? What do you do when there apparently is no rhythm...we'll have to make our own!

Pops and Locks Laced with Smoove Slink - Joy Herbst
Are you craving more slink peppered with some syncopated locks in your tribal fusion dancing?
In this class Joy will lead you through style defining drills and exercises to better toggle between snake-like movements
and pops and locks. Combinations will be taught integrating the techniques learned in class.

Free Rhythm Warmup with Chris Phillips
We'll spend some time warming up and going over basic middle eastern rhythms. All drummers, musicians and dancers are welcome to join in. Free.

WHO IS PAOLA BLANTON?
This fiery Macedonian immigrated to the U.S. as a young child. Passionate about their native Balkan folklore, her family trained Paola and her two sisters extensively in Balkan dance forms, including the kolo circle dances and chochek, the Roma-inspired dance featuring hips, swirly hands, and feisty rhythms with heavy Ottoman influence. As a college sophomore in Chicago, she took her first MED class from Jasmine Jahal, Chicago’s pioneer belly dance performer and teacher. That was the beginning of a lifetime love affair with Raqs Sharqi, or Middle Eastern Dance.

While Paola has studied with many MED greats, one of the most profound influences on her dance comes from a teacher she's never met in the flesh - Isadora Duncan. In the second half of class, you will get on your feet for a Sigil School whirlwind demonstration. Tag words: warm-ups, transitions, music, mixes, tempo, choreography, common vocab, work, craft, drill, team, time, counting, working backwards, notes, repetition, fellowship, and yes, you will sweat!

"HOTPOTTURBOTRIBALTRICKS" - 2:30-4:30pm - Strap-on your jet-packs. In this workshop you'll get the skinny on what happens when you let off a lot of steam while dancing really good, really fast. You'll learn and drill two original combos snatched directly from the Hot Pot Studio tribal vocabulary, both equipped for improv and ready for show. You will have fun. You will sweat. You will be inspired. And after class when you're sore and on the floor, remember, "Horsepower" is defined as work done over time. We just teach you the tricks.

"UNMATA au naturel" - 12:00-1:30pm - This multi-level workshop will outline two tribal fusion combinations emphasizing technique and isolation. The first combination will incorporate the building blocks of UNMATA's modern bellydance style. The second combination will focus primarily on the Hula Fusion nuance. Each movement will be outlined within a tribal cueing system so that it may be added to any troupe's choreography or tribal vocabulary. Amy will describe and drill each individual movement, then fasten them together into an accessible tribal combo that will be practiced in useful group and duet formations.

"Overlaying Isolations, Amy Sigil Style" - 2:00-3:30pm - Amy's Art of Overlay is at the heart of this intermediate to advanced belly dance workshop aimed to add expressive layers and distinction to your dance style. Although controlled simultaneous movement is a complex idea, this class provides a simple approach certain to bring impressive results. Beginning with a thorough breakdown of basic isolation technique, Amy will expand such elements as core strength and relaxed tension, and then demonstrate helpful exercises that are necessary to develop an awareness needed to isolate key muscle groups. Then she will teach and drill an isolation combo that incorporates the artistic flare unique to Amy Sigil and UNMATA. Because this class is designed for the intermediate to advanced dancer, a sufficient understanding of balance and timing is prerequisite.

Calling Boston area dancers: I'm looking for a ride between here and Rakkasah, and am happy to pitch in for gas & road-snacks. If you know anyone heading down, please put us in contact- save your friends money and make a fellow dancer oh so happy!

I promised to be there from Friday afternoon through Sunday evening to help a vendor and my ride situation fell through last minute. I'd so much rather travel with a dancer than greyhound. I'd gladly meet up with a ride anywhere on a commuter rail from Boston to save the trouble of a bus.

Hey, my name is sheri . I had a store in ATlanta callled Soul Kiss for 15 years which i just closed down. And i am now here on the East coast (NJ) and just starting to do fest's and learning which ones are out there , which don't seem like alot .... so HELP !! Anyone who knows of any Fest's that would be good for me (Below i give a synopsis of waht i carry). Also... i am also interested in doing Pennsic but i cannot work the whole thing. (Got a straight job during the week now) yikes!! I have never been to Penzik beforeb, but i just did a REnn fair and someone told me that if i can get a space (that is, if there are any, ) under the main baazar's tent that i could get somone to run it for me for commiss on whatever they sell. while i am not there. (I will have alot of great stuf- see list below). So i'm putting a shout out there to anyone who might be interested and has a booth in the maiin bazzar allready.

Soul Kiss is blend of goods all finely chosen or made by my own design in various places around the world. If you find me at a Festival, this is what you will see:

Soul Kiss Silver - Many of my peices are antique. Much of the very rare and authentically old peices of silver from India are gone, However I am still able to bring incredably rare and old peices to my customers. Many of the peices i get are old sterling silver wedding peices from women in Rhajastan which i find and re-string them into a clevor design of necklaces which are adjustable. Becuase they are adjustable they are like three neck's in one becuase they can be worn as a high choker or many different lengths. When worn as a choker the strands hang down the back. Soul Kiss also carries very unique stones, an awesome eclectic array of earings and rings.
Mid priced jewerly - Also very unique designs. Much of of it is made of natural elements such as wood, bamboo and stones. All with a very exotic feel.

Clothing - All my own designs. Mostly street wear with a tribal edge. Great all natural japenese style shirts for women, with hand painted wood beaded tyes. Beautiful skirts with panels of very old hand embroidered fabrics the northern Indian gypsy tribes. Lots of Men's too which is rare at Fest's because there are never any great choices for guys!! All made with beautiful natural fabrics. sexy.

Beautiful Statues and hand carved masks - All carved out of exotic woods such as mango wood and jackfruit wood etc. All of my carvings i have made in very small villages in the high mountains of Bali. I support many many families and artisans in those villages.

Accesories - I carry many various Sacred art scarves from India, I have yummy pashimina's that make great elegant shawls for a light weight but warm cover up for the summer. And great prices too !! Soul Kiss carries alot of antique wedding sari's that are gorgous.
For the Bellydancers - Depending on the Festival, you will always find great stuf for the Bellydancers. Some of the Fest's more so, depending on which one, but e-mail me and i will let you know which ones. I will always carry exotic adormnents tho that are not readily seen at most or all fest's !! We will incorporate other elements into spins and kicks, drawing a wee bit from tango, Ballet and Classical indian Kathak, exploring things like leg extension and stomping. Spotting basics, as well as non spotted turns, will be covered, and techniques for using legs and arms to initiate a turn.

So i have been in hiding since Ive moved to the Hudson Valley 9 months ago. But as the summer is coming up and vacation time is stacking... Im feeling alittle anxious to do more. This workshop will focus on core technique to help you build clarity and refinement in your movements. Donna will detail cross-training tips from classical dance and movement science traditions that create a sophisticated and polished dancer. Topics will include breathing techniques; building elasticity; alignment; core/pelvic strength; muscular efficiency; precision in stationary and travelling hip work. This class is open to all levels.

SUNDAY - Layering and Multi-tasking 12-4pm
Take your dance skills to the next level through layering and multi-tasking of movements. Donna will provide a review of movement fundamentals followed by focused study on layering and multi-tasking techniques including adding upper body to hip work, diversifying accents (lyrical versus percussive accents), and building complexity and speed while maintaining precision.

Who:
Dancing since she was 12, Donna Mejia is an acclaimed choreographer, lecturer, teacher, administrator, and performer specializing in contemporary dance, traditions of the African Diaspora, and new fusion traditions in world electronica. She is the new Guest Artist in Residence for the Smith College Dance Department and is the first to hold a Tribal Fusion position in higher education. For 10 years she was a faculty member of the Colorado College Drama and Dance department, and Director of the highly successful Colorado College Summer Dance Festival. For twelve years she served as managing director of the award-winning Harambee African Dance Ensemble of CU-Boulder. In 2005 she was nominated for the Pikes Peak Artists Awards in Choreography, received critical acclaim for her choreography in a collaborative stage production of “Arabian Nights”, and performed for the inaugural 2005 Colorado Dance Awards. She continues to teach, choreograph and perform Modern dance, Improvisation, Hip Hop, Jazz, Arabic Tribal Fusion and traditional dances of the African Diaspora for schools, private organizations and dance festivals internationally. Her workshops at Tribal Fest 2006 and Tribal Café 2006 sold out quickly. Donna is an authorized instructor of Brazilian Silvestre technique. Donna shares her life with husband, Shatta (educator and musician), and daughter, Ajah (born 2001).

Donna will detail cross-training tips from classical dance and movement science traditions that create a sophisticated and polished dancer. Topics will include breathing techniques; building elasticity; alignment; core/pelvic strength; muscular efficiency; precision in stationary and travelling hip work. This class is open to all levels.

SUNDAY - Layering and Multi-tasking 12-4pm
Take your dance skills to the next level through layering and multi-tasking of movements. Donna will provide a review of movement fundamentals followed by focused study on layering and multi-tasking techniques including adding upper body to hip work, diversifying accents (lyrical versus percussive accents), and building complexity and speed while maintaining precision.

Who:
Dancing since she was 12, Donna Mejia is an acclaimed choreographer, lecturer, teacher, administrator, and performer specializing in contemporary dance, traditions of the African Diaspora, and new fusion traditions in world electronica. She is the new Guest Artist in Residence for the Smith College Dance Department and is the first to hold a Tribal Fusion position in higher education. For 10 years she was a faculty member of the Colorado College Drama and Dance department, and Director of the highly successful Colorado College Summer Dance Festival. For twelve years she served as managing director of the award-winning Harambee African Dance Ensemble of CU-Boulder. In 2005 she was nominated for the Pikes Peak Artists Awards in Choreography, received critical acclaim for her choreography in a collaborative stage production of “Arabian Nights”, and performed for the inaugural 2005 Colorado Dance Awards. She continues to teach, choreograph and perform Modern dance, Improvisation, Hip Hop, Jazz, Arabic Tribal Fusion and traditional dances of the African Diaspora for schools, private organizations and dance festivals internationally. Her workshops at Tribal Fest 2006 and Tribal Café 2006 sold out quickly. Donna is an authorized instructor of Brazilian Silvestre technique. Donna shares her life with husband, Shatta (educator and musician), and daughter, Ajah (born 2001).
